Zerobaseone are back, more confident than ever, with the release of Ascend- the group steps into a more refined version of their imagery and musical identity. Marking the group’s first comeback as a five member lineup, this mini album draws back from their brighter, youthful concepts of previous albums. Leaning into something more refined, moodier and more mature than ever, creating what is their most cohesive piece of artistry to date.

Ascend- begins with the track “intro”, an instrumental only song, immediately establishing the mood and atmosphere of the project. The production leans into a cinematic and futuristic feel, leading into the title track “Top 5″, a groovy dance-pop track featuring addictive hooks and hip-hop rhythms. The song’s structure keeps fans engaged throughout, with a slightly unconventional layout, allowing fans to experience the unpredictability with each listen revealing a new feeling. “Top 5” doesn’t rely on explosive moments, or dramatic high-notes, instead the charisma and confident delivery draws the attention of listeners worldwide. It’s a track designed for both on stage moments and repeat listens, similar to many of zerobaseone’s previous albums.

One of the biggest strengths I noticed within this album is the natural flow between each track. Rather than each track jumping dramatically to a different genre, each song feels like a unique continuation of the last, without making the album feel too repetitive. Introducing R&B influences, V for Vision” slows things down, highlighting the group’s evolved maturity. Tracks like Customize” stand out particularly, due to member Park Gunwook’s involvement in writing and composing, this marks his first credited self-produced song since their debut in 2023.

“Exotic” provides the album with a burst of energy, with dramatic vocals and a pulsing instrumental, it’s a song built perfectly for live performances. This alone makes it one of the albums most outstanding and instantly memorable tracks. Shifting into a softer and emotionally heavy moment, comes the track “Changes” making the group’s unique vocal colour shine, proving again why Zerobaseone are consistently named online as one of 5th generation K-pop’s strongest groups vocally. While the tracks surrounding this song are more memorable, this track balances the pacing of the album, allowing fans to step back and enjoy the late-night feel.

Closing off the album with “Zero to Hundred” pulls the project to an end perfectly. Nostalgia and modernity blending into a reflective song, that draws out just enough emotion, the track leaves a lasting impression of what the group are capable of and their overall artistry.

The tracklist evolution of Ascend proves to be intentional, offering listeners an experience rather than just a collection of songs. With Ascend, Zerobaseone moves into a new era that already feels established. They are not searching for a new sound; they have become a new sound within the K-pop industry.
