A Ridiculous Premise Powered by Great Comic Chemistry

Action-comedies tend to spend too much time over-explaining their setups, however, director Park Gyu-tae’s latest Netflix movie, Husbands in Action (also known as Husbands in other regions), dodges that pitfall completely. Premiering internationally on 19 June 2026, this South Korean action-comedy feature film delightfully delivers a simple hook: an ex-husband and a current husband are forced to work together to save the woman they both love and obviously the daughter.

Starring the ever-reliable Jin Sun-kyu and the charming Gong Myung, the movie contrasts high-stakes crime elements with relentless and chaotic buddy-comedy dynamics. Going into this movie, the primary expectation is like this: straightforward and face-paced summer entertainment. While the storyline does end up going down a predictable path, the mismatched and electric dynamic of the two leads makes sure that the ride is worth your while. Jin Sun-kyu and Gong Myung reunite after working together 7 years ago on Extreme Job, where they were two bumbling “Dumb and Dumber” detectives within a drug squad. We even see a reunion of Trio CeGil, also known as Crazy Sisters or Crazy Trio from the variety show Running Man, Jeon So-min, Kang Han-na, and Lee Da-hee. This trio is well-known for their chaotic, high-energy personalities which fit perfectly within this feature film.

What Is Husbands in Action About?

The movie starts off with an intense and petty ego battle between Hwang Choong-sik, a relentless and rough-edged narcotics detective who basically lives at the police station, and Lee Min-seok, a polite and handsome young veterinarian. The cause of their tense rivalry? Min-seok is currently married to Choong-sik’s ex-wife, Si-nae (Kang Han-na) and when they bump into each other at a school event, the tension between dad and step-dad is palpable.

Their domestic bickering, however, is abruptly paused when a rising drug syndicate abducts Si-nae and her daughter, Hwang Yeon-ju (Oh Eun-seo), and at the centre of the ransom demand is Ma Do-jun (Kim Ji-suk), a ruthless new gang boss. The highly dysfunctional duo realises that time is running out and forms a wild and unlikely partnership. What follows is a chaotic and reckless rescue mission across the city as the duo fight, stumble, and bicker their way through the criminal underworld.

Characters and Overall Performance

The undeniable driving force of Husbands in Action is the amazing comedic chemistry between Jin Sun-kyu and Gong Myung.

  • Jin Sun-kyu shines as Choong-sik: He is a seasoned detective with a constant state of hyper-frustration that is absolutely hilarious. He is genuinely a man who would rather take down a whole drug cartel single-handedly than spend another minute in a car with his ex-wife’s new husband.
  • Gong Myung provides the perfect counterweight as Min-seok: Infusing the character with an easy and sensitive charm, he created a stark contrast to Choong-sik’s hilarious impulsive and aggressive nature.

Rather than entirely depending on cheap slapstick, the actors find humour in their clashing personalities. Their petty arguments over parenting and past history feels so authentic and elevates the script. The supporting cast is not just background noise but are another colourful layer of dynamics in this film. From Kim Ji-suk being a menacing gang leader trying to build his way up to Yoon Kyung-ho as an old-school mobster, Kim Yong-gang, attempting to reclaim his former glory. Kang Han-na also ensures that Si-nae is not a damsel in distress waiting to be rescued but a resilient and strong character.

Plotline and Writing

The writing falters because of its longevity, especially how the pacing in the first half of the movie is highly entertaining and fast and it slows down and becomes repetitive towards the final act. Once the main plot device of the ex-husband/current husband bickering slows down, the movie falls back on standard and predictable action tropes. The subplots around the fractured drug ring doesn’t exactly carry the same emotional weight or entertainment value as the core duo and this causes the pacing to drag slightly right before the climax.

Production Quality

Husbands in Action boasts bright, sleek, and energetic production values on the technical side. The cinematography follows the action sequences with a distinctly comic tone, emphasises character reactions, follows comedic timing, and follows physical stumbles over gritty violence. Directing choices that are memorable like a genuinely hilarious sequence involving a light-up foot piano to keep the visual plotline light and playful. The editing keeps the 107-minute runtime moving smoothly and swiftly, and the upbeat and modern soundtrack does a solid job of ramping up the energy during the movie’s chaotic car chases and street brawls.

What Worked and What Didn’t

Jin Sun-kyu and Gong Myung are phenomenal and a highly watchable comedic duo and the film captures this beautifully. It emphasises its absurdity and funny storyline without overcomplicating it. The main characters are fun, strong, different, and distinct and the supporting cast adds more colourful layers to the entire chaos. The narrative doesn’t reinvent the wheel and it just relies on very familiar action-comedy beats. The constant bickering does start to feel repetitive and loses its momentum in the later sections.

Should You Watch Husbands in Action?

Husbands in Action is a chaotic, loud, and thoroughly entertaining popcorn movie. It doesn’t try to reinvent the action-comedy genre, but it fully delivers a laugh-out-loud experience that is easily driven by the stunning performances of Jin Sun-kyu and Gong Myung. If you are a fan of chaotic and funny partnership dynamics and witty K-drama humour, then this is a fun and chilled recommendation for the weekend. You can turn your brain off, enjoy the hilarious chemistry, and watch these two desperate husbands struggle to work together to find their wife.
